I don’t understand why the media will not acknowledge that some of these women have girlfriends or wives, yet they have no hesitation in acknowledging male partners. This bugs me so much. They have gone public with their relationships so there is nothing stopping these people from just saying it. Their relationship is just as valid as any of the straight women who are celebrating. It’s not that hard to say ‘girlfriend’ or ‘wife’ instead of ‘fan’ or ‘friend’.
sport playing gal pals
I don’t follow soccer so I googled these athletes, and the first page of results brings up that;
- the first image is of Waumbach kissing her wife, Sarah Huffman. Huffman is listed as ‘spouse’ on Waumbach’s wikipedia page and properly credited in the CNN posts of the same image.
- the second image of Erin McLeod is probably with her partner Ella Masar, who she mentioned being in a relationship with as recently as a May 29 article about her coming out, as well as being pictured with her in her twitter avatar selfie. They both tweet pride/couple stuff at each other.
In her coming out interview, McLeod says she’d given lots of thought to coming out as a professional athlete, and done it in hopes of having a positive impact on younger people. She was especially motivated by the homophobic censorship around the 2014 Olympic games in Russia, stating of her girlfriend Masar that “ ….I couldn’t imagine not being able to hold my partner after
winning an Olympic medal; I wouldn’t be anywhere without her support and
love,”Just felt like sharing, to show that the ‘gal pal’ reporting phenomenon is real.
